How do I dual wield in dragon age origins?

I have dual wielding expertise trained up to the second one, yet when ever I wield one weapon, then select another in my inventory to wield, it simply switches which weapon is wielded, instead of dual wielding them both - and they are both single-handed weapons.How do I dual wield in dragon age origins?
If you haven't trained dual-weapon mastery, you can only wield a long sword (or an axe, mace) as the main weapon and a dagger as a side weapon. With dual-weapon mastery you will be able to wield whichever single-handed weapons you want.
